For the Austrian Pavilion, Jakob Lena Knebl and Ashley Hans Scheirl have conceived stage-like installations, entitled Invitation of the Soft Machine and Her Angry Body Parts, in which they unfurl their entire artistic cosmos—from paintings, textile works, photographs, objects, sound works, and videos to holograms and interactive apps.
These “spaces of desire” irritate conventional ideas of museum presentations and undercut the hierarchies of art and design, of high and low.
They open up a space for constructions of identity, for desire and sensory experience, and can be understood as a liberation from conventions—for the artists themselves and for the viewers.
A comprehensive satellite program will accompany the spatial interventions in Venice.
